Whole Wheat Bread

There aren’t many things better than the sense of accomplishment acquired from baking your own bread, except for of course, indulging in a slice from a fresh loaf slathered with warm butter and honey. Yes it takes some time and a little bit of manual labor, but this wheat bread is completely worth the effort and much easier than you may think. Plus, it’s free of all the unnecessary chemicals and preservatives in most brands in the supermarket. If time is of concern, just make a few batches one Sunday and freeze the baked product until ready to use. Best of all, this is a basic recipe that can be easily adapted to suit a variety of tastes. How about cinnamon-raisin swirl bread or my personal favorite, a cranberry and walnut loaf? This bread is also soft but sturdy enough to make thinner slices that are excellent for sandwiches. Use the leftovers to make croutons, french toast, bread pudding… the possibilities are endless!

Monkey Bread

Monkey Bread

Ever had a cinnamon roll? What about a McDonald’s Cinna-Melt? Well, this is better than both of those. Monkey Bread is a southern food that is often served sweet (but it definitely doesn’t have to be! Garlic Parmesan Monkey bread is pretty good too!) You can make the dough from scratch, but refrigerated biscuit dough works just as well. You can adjust the levels of maple syrup and molasses in this recipe for a sweeter or less sweet version. Eat your Monkey Bread for breakfast then snack on the leftovers all day. This crowd pleaser is best the same day that it is prepared.

This 3-ingredient recipe uses peanut butter, sugar, and an egg to create pure ambrosia in cookie form. My mom taught me this recipe many years ago, but I have seen similar versions on the web. Most “simple” peanut butter cookie recipes use at least 5 or 6 ingredients, but only three are necessary for greatness. A word of advice: Be careful not to over brown the cookies. They will change color very little (if at all) during the baking process.

Pigs a Blanket

These pigs in a blanket are so easy, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of them sooner. They require only three ingredients and minimal preparation. Don’t let their simplicity fool you! These piggies are delicious. An old friend gave me this recipe, but multiple versions are available on the internet.

Avocado Pie

Slice of Avocado Pie

Crafty in the Kitchen has officially been online for one year! To celebrate, I made a recipe from this month’s issue of Food Network Magazine, Avocado Pie. Although avocado desserts are more typical to Mexican cuisine, their presence is growing in America. A favorite in many California diners, Avocado Pie is like cheesecake but with a slightly lighter texture and more citrus flavors. Best of all, this is a no-bake recipe.
